Why Hungary | Specific Advantages for Filmmakers in Hungary

- 24 % tax incentive existing since 2004 is secure and reliable. This is a routine procedure administrated through The National Film Office.

- Although 25% VAT is charged on top of services, 95% is routinely reclaimable. (We recommend as advisor the international accounting firm, Ernst and Young, Hungary)

- Hungarian art departments have extensive experience and demonstrate proven quality in set construction and set dressing, from medieval towns to futuristic Sci fi architecture. Huge sets and open-air back lots are efficiently designed, constructed and handled by Hungarian crews.

- Labor costs in Hungary are dramatically lower than the US, Canada and UK as well as Western Europe. For ‘Munich,’ Spielberg shot Budapest for Paris, Rome, London, etc. primarily for this reason.

- The only fringe required is a 2% local industrial tax.

- Extras are inexpensive. 12.000.- HUF or $58.00 for a 12 hour shoot.

- Rates are based on 12 hour days. Overtime is relatively inexpensive and fixed:

  • 3.000 - HUF / $14.60 USD for drivers, clean-up crew and security.
  • 5.000 - HUF/ $24.30 USD for the first hour and 6000,- HUF/ $29.20 USD for the second and each additional hour for rest of the crew.
  • Actors are negotiable based on low percentage.

- Complete financing, insurance, bond fees and legal fees qualify for the rebate as long as they are paid up front and through a Hungarian entity.
